description:
Representation of forest types, total carbon storage, and annual sequestration value across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA; including the City of Toronto and the entireties of York, Peel, Durham, and Halton Regions). Data was sourced from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resource’s Wooded Area layer (2019), Wetlands layer (2024), and Ecological Land Classification (ELC) (2024) from Toronto and Region Conservation Authority, Conservation Halton, Credit Valley Conservation, Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority, Central Lake Ontario Conservation Authority, and Kawartha Conservation. Forest was defined using the Wooded Area layer to be areas with greater than 60% canopy cover and trees taller than 2 metres.

Total carbon storage and annual sequestration value across the study area was quantified using average storage and sequestration rates assigned to each forest feature. Rates were based on insights from TRCA’s ongoing research and literature review on land-cover-based values in southern Ontario in the Natural Asset Carbon Assessment Guide and Toolbox (NACAGT). An economic value was also estimated for forest carbon stocks and sequestration in the GTA.

This version has been generalized and optimized for web map purposes.
