Description: This data was derived as part of the Overall Assessment of the State of Nearshore Waters. Across Lake Ontario, public beaches are popular recreation spots and use should not be restricted by environmental quality concerns. Poor water quality at beaches due to bacterial contamination can have negative effects on human health and limit recreational useBeach locations and the percent of time that a beach was posted in each of July and August 2018were extracted from the Swim Drink Fish Swim Guide. The average amount of time that each beach was posted as unsafe for swimming was calculated and used to assign low, moderate or high stress to each Regional Unit.Low Stress: beaches posted 5% or less of the time; Moderate Stress: beaches posted 5 to 20% of the time; High Stress: beaches posted over 20% of the time
