Hydrogeomorphic Wetlands breaks down the classification of wetlands by Barrier-Protected, Lacustrine and Riverine. Hydrogeomorphic Wetlands are classified based on the following description below:

Lacustrine: Wetlands which are controlled directly by water of the Great Lakes and are strongly affected by lake-level fluctuations, nearshore currents, seiches, and ice scour.

Riverine: Wetlands which occur along and within rivers, creeks that flow into or between the Great Lakes

Barrier Protected: Wetlands which originate from either coastal or fluvial processes, but coastal nearshore and onshore processes separated these wetlands from the Great Lakes by a barrier beach of other barrier feature.
